Tchaikovsky String Quartet
|
The Tchaikovsky String Quartet was formed at the Moscow Conservatory in the early 1970s, when four students - Mikhail Gotsdiner, Andrei Oguievski, Sergei Baturin, and Oleg Smirnov - met in the chamber music classes of Professor R.Davidian, and discovered their mutual love of the quartet medium. While still students at the Conservatory, the Quartet took first prize at the Bartok International Festival in Budapest, in 1975. Each of the four members benefited from a consummate musical education, having studied privately with the leading teachers at the Moscow Conservatory - including D.Oistrakn, G.Kozolupola, F.Druzhinin, and I.Bezrodnyi.
Following graduation, the four members went their separate ways, gaining experience in a variety of ensemble and chamber music settings. They reunited temporarily in the 1980s for a three-year contract in Mexico City, and then permanently after winning first prize at the Valentino Bucchi International String Competition in Rome, in 1990. In 1993, the quartet assumed the name Tchaikovsky String Quartet - in tribute to the beloved composer whose death centennial was being celebrated that year.
The Tchaikovsky String Quartet tours regularly throughout Europe, and to date has released two CDs. Whether performing Tchaikovsky, Borodin, Mozart, or Samuel Barber, the Quartet brings an exquisite balance of technical skill and exceptional musical taste to each performance.
